What to ask in a redundancy meeting

First of all don’t panic! Arm yourself with knowledge on the law and you will be in a much better place to navigate through the process and remain in control of the situation.

Check out the Government’s website:  www.gov.uk/redundant-your-rights. This site has all the legal information you need to know about redundancy.

Your employer should offer you redundancy consultation. Always make sure you find out;

1.       What is the business reason for the redundancies and why your specific role is being made redundant?

2.       How many others are being made redundant and how long will your consultation period last?

3.       What redundancy selection criteria  has been used?

4.       What other alternatives has the firm thought about instead of making redundancies?

5.       What will happen in the consultation period?

6.       What is the process regarding redeployment, suitable alternative positions and a trial period?

7.       What is the firm redundancy pay and is it enhanced from the statutory rate?

8.       How much will the firm contribute towards the legal advice for a settlement agreement?

Remember,   also that you are entitled to take time out from work to attend interviews, but you must agree this with your manager in advance.

There are many other questions you can ask to ensure that the firm complies with their legal responsibilities but these are the basics and should give you adequate information to make your own decision about how you handle this process yourself.

Our top tips are:

  • Get everything in writing
  • Always make notes of conversations
  •  Always check the redundancy financial calculations and details (such as your first day of service and your contractual notice period) – these often get miscalculated by HR!
  • Make sure the calculations include any untaken holiday you may be owed too.
  •  If you are on maternity leave, make sure your manager knows  you have enhanced legal rights for redeployment purposes
  • Finally, get your CV updated and circulated round to agencies, and job websites.  Accepting the situation will help you move on quicker. All the best!
